چکیده

Low-level Radiation Harmed Humans Near Three Mile Island Wing et al. (1) analyze data from the area nearest the Three Mile Island nuclear installation, showing elevated cancer incidence rates 5 years after the 1979 accident. Wing et al. refute earlier assumptions that lowlevel radioactive emissions from the accident were too minute to produce observable effects (2). The critical analysis by Wing et al. (1) shows excess cases for all cancers combined, lung cancers, and leukemia.

Recent Fukushima nuclear detonation, Chernobyl nuclear fallout, three mile island nuclear accident and atomic bomb explosion – rethinking the effects of nuclear radiations over human health

Background: The earlier Atomic Bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three worth mentioning nuclear accidents - detonation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Chernobyl nuclear fallout and an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have made us more worried about the secure exploitation of nuclear energy. The central focus of this paper is to review radiation-mediated health e...

Nuclear denial: From Hiroshima to Fukushima

Governments and the nuclear power industry have a strong interest in playing down the harmful effects of radiation from atomic weapons and nuclear power plants. Over the years, some scientists have supported the view that low levels of radiation are not harmful, while other scientists have held that all radiation is harmful. The author examines the radiation effects of nuclear bombs dropped on ...

A Re-Analysis of Cancer Incidence Near the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant A Re-Analysis of Cancer Incidence near the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant

Introduction The well-known accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, began on March 28, 1979. Industry and government reports concluded that the maximum gamma dose to a member of the general population was about 1 mSv and that the accident would not result in detectable health effects [2,11]. Despite these reassurances, m...

Comments on "A reevaluation of cancer incidence near the Three Mile Island nuclear plant".

This issue of the journal includes a critical review and reanalysis by Wing et al. (1) of a cancer study we conducted in the aftermath of the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant (2,3). We find the lengthy piece tendentious and unbalanced. No notice is taken of any of the innovations of the original study, such as the exposure model that took detailed account of prevailing...

A reevaluation of cancer incidence near the Three Mile Island nuclear plant: the collision of evidence and assumptions.

Previous studies concluded that there was no evidence that the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island (TMI) affected cancer incidence in the surrounding area; however, there were logical and methodological problems in earlier reports that led us to reconsider data previously collected. A 10-mile area around TMI was divided into 69 study tracts, which were assigned radiation dose estimates b...
